Mentoring Program Overview

Mentoring Program Overview: Four Core Elements

Our mentoring program has served thousands of new Iowa administrators over the decades. We continue to evolve our program to meet the changing needs of our leaders.  Four core elements form the foundation of our program, which meets the requirements outlined under § chapter 284A.5 to support beginning administrators' professional and personal needs.

Learn more about our year-long program, hear from past participants, and take the next steps to join the 2025-26 cohort!

We match mentees with mentors who share similar experiences in role, district or building size, location, and more — ensuring meaningful connections and valuable guidance.
Participants connect with relevant, role-specific content, gain insights from experienced colleagues, and expand their professional network through multiple statewide mentoring meetings held throughout the year.
Several times a year, we publish the Mentoring Matters blog, featuring articles, resources, and tools that address key questions and topics identified through participant feedback. Our mentor-specific site provides specialized tools and resources designed to empower our mentors in excelling at their role.
Mentors are always “on call" and provide consistent support through weekly check-ins and monthly meetings. Both mentors and mentees visit each other’s buildings or districts to gain deeper insight. Plus, SAI staff are always available for additional support.

Information for Superintendents

SAI's mentoring program satisfies requirements established in § chapter 284A.5 for beginning administrators. A beginning administrator is defined by law as “an individual … who is assuming a position as a school district principal or superintendent for the first time.” Additionally, SAI offers an optional program for assistant/associate principals and deans.

Next Steps

If you have any new administrators you’d like to enroll in the program, just follow these simple steps.

  1. Confirm that you have an agreement with SAI on file. If not, sign and submit this Agreement to SAI.
  2. If needed, use this document to educate your board about SAI’s Mentoring Program.
  3. Have your new leader/s register for the program. Early enrollment enables the mentor matching process to begin as soon as possible.
  4. Please note: You do not need to secure a mentor for your beginning administrator; this is part of the service provided by SAI.
