Coping with Negative Feedback

Elementary Principals,

The end of the year often coincides with the gathering of feedback (either solicited or unsolicited). Sometimes, that feedback can be tough to take. Author, experienced principal, and nationally recognized principal, Jessica Cabeen explains how to gain perspective from it.

Cabeen explains how we tend to fixate on the one unhelpful or negative comment while overlooking the many positive and productive ones. She offers four ways to stay grounded:

  1. Admit that you get it wrong sometimes. Be willing to be vulnerable — share concerns and fears in your mentoring partnership.
  2. Tap into your network. You’re not alone. Before reacting to feedback, reach out to get insight and perspective from trusted colleagues — those whose voices you trust and respect.
  3. Frame your thinking through the lens of growth. When tough feedback comes your way, ask yourself What can I learn from this? What steps might I take? What’s the lesson here?
  4. Find joy and focus on your why. Be intentional about noticing what’s going well. Maybe choose a gratitude journal and keep a daily list of what’s bringing you joy. Or, choose a color for the day; and any time you see that color, you think of something for which you’re grateful. Keep focused on your vision and mission.

Cabeen advises leaders to take what you can use from the feedback and let the rest go.
